NASHVILLE -- Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt has hired Chargers assistant Jason Michael to be Tennessees new offensive co-ordinator as he continues to fill out his coaching staff. The Titans announced the hiring on Friday. Whisenhunt, who was hired Monday, plans to call the plays offensively. But he said that Michael really impressed him with his knowledge of the run and pass games and that the coach was a big part of putting together plans in San Diego this season. "He is very familiar with the offensive system that we want to implement here, which includes bits and pieces from a number of offensive systems," Whisenhunt said in a statement. "He is intelligent and a good communicator. He was responsible for presenting a couple of game-plan packages to our offence each week and he was impressive." Michael, 35, worked this past season with Whisenhunt in San Diego. Michael spent the past three seasons coaching tight ends for the Chargers with San Diego ranking in the NFLs top 10 offensively in two of his three seasons. He also was first an offensive assistant and then quarterbacks coach with San Francisco in 2009 and 2010. He has local ties having played quarterback helping Western Kentucky win the 2002 Division I-AA championship. Michael started coaching at the University of Tennessee as a graduate assistant before moving to the NFL in 2005 with Oakland, then the Jets. Michael spent 2008 coaching tight ends at the University of Tennessee in Phillip Fulmers final season. Michael called this a great situation with the chance to work with Whisenhunt in Tennessee exciting both professionally and personally. He said he learned so much from Whisenhunt and that the men worked well together. "It will be fun to come there and create an offence that is built around a new group of players," Michael said. "Nine years ago, this would have been the job I dreamed about - with my wife from Knoxville and going to school in Bowling Green -- an opportunity to come home to be the offensive co-ordinator for the Titans." VALLNORD, Andorra - Canadian Dominique Maltais placed first in a snowboard cross World Cup event on Saturday, finishing ahead of Bulgarias Alexandra Jekova in the final. American Lindsey Jacobellis was third, while Japans Yuka Fujimori finished just off the podium. Maltais, from Petite-Riviere-St-Francois, Que., earned bronze at the 2006 Olympic Games and is set to return to the Games this February in Sochi, Russia. Maelle Ricker of Squamish, B.C., was eighth, while Carle Brenneman of Whistler, B.C., was 18th and Zoe Bergermann of Acton, Ont., placed 20th. Allonzo Trier Jersey . -- Keith Aulie has joined the Tampa Bay Lightning. Allan Houston Jersey . The lightning strike was in the parking lot of Crew Stadium on Saturday night, but its not known if the off-duty lieutenant was struck directly, Columbus Fire Department Battalion Chief Tracy Smith said. The firefighter, identified as Lt.VANCOUVER - Eddie Lack helped the Vancouver Canucks overcome a case of the blues Wednesday night. Lack made 20 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Canucks blanked the St. Louis Blues 1-0 in the first post-Olympic game for both teams night. The win was like sweet music to the Canucks (28-24-9) as they ended their losing streak at seven games while moving into sole possession of eighth place in the Western Conference. The Blues (39-13-6) dropped their third straight decision to Vancouver this season as they were shut out for the first time in 2013-14. "It feels very good to be able to shut the door," said Lack. "It was very big for our team. "Its a big relief." The Canucks outshot the Blues 35-20, but Lack, Vancouvers backup who is in his first full NHL season, was forced to make many difficult saves. "I feel like I have been working on this start for a while and I was really excited to play, and Rollie (Melanson, Vancouvers goalie coach) has been bugging me for weeks saying we need to win these 1-0 games, so its huge," said Lack. Jannik Hansen scored the games only goal as he finally broke a scoreless deadlock at 11:13 of the third period. He took a backhand stretch pass from Tom Sestito from deep in the Vancouver zone just past centre ice, raced in on a breakaway and beat Halak with a high shot. It was Hansens first goal in just over a month, a span of eight games, after he last scored Jan. 26 against Phoenix. "Great play by Tommy, he could see I was taking off a little early and he fed me a nice pass, and I was able to get it through the goalie," said Hansen. "You dont have to look at the standings very long to see we need to win a lot of games here to make the playoffs, and its obviously a very strong opponent today, a playoff team. These are the teams you have to beat. We cant just beat the teams below us." Vancouver was blanked on four power plays while St. Louis failed to score on three. Lack drew the start after backstopping the Canucks to a pair of wins over St. Louis earlier this season. Three of his nine wins have come against the Blues, and he has allowed only three goals to them. The Canucks came out with the added aggression that coach John Tortorella has been seeking as they outshot the Blues 14-6 in the first period. But for most of the night, the hosts could not beat a steady Halak, who felt fresh after playing just two games for Slovakia in the Olympics and getting plenty of rest after arriving back in St. Louis last Thursday. "It was a pretty good pace for 60 minutes," said Halak. "It was just that we came up short. We couldnt score. "I tried to do my best. I tried to give the guys a chance to win. Id like to get (Hansens goal) back." St. Louis had nine players in Sochi and the Canucks hhad seven.dddddddddddd But Blues coach Ken Hitchcock, who served as an assistant with Canadas gold-medal-winning team, did not think post-Olympic fatigue was a factor. "It was a hard fought, well played game for the most part," said Hitchcock. "I didnt think we had the energy in the third period than we did in the end of the first and the second. We had a great second period. But weve had trouble beating (Lack.) We havent scored on him, and hes made some big saves and hes won a lot of the scrambles. We had all the penetration in the second period for all the scoring chances." Hitchcock lamented his teams inability to score on odd-man rushes in two losses in Vancouver this season. "When you get two-on-ones and three-on-ones on the road, youve got to capitalize," he said. "I think that was the difference in the hockey game." Lacks best moments came late in the second period as he denied Blues captain David Backes on a one-timer during a delayed penalty and Alex Steen on a deflection, and got his pad on a T.J. Oshie shot before defenceman Alex Edler blocked the puck as he attempted to put in the rebound. After the save, fans chanted "Eddie! Eddie!" But Oshie, who played for the U.S. in the Olympics, was not willing to give Lack too much credit. "He made some good saves, but I dont think we really tested him like we could have," said Oshie. "We let him see a lot of pucks." There was no denying Vancouvers desperation though. "Theyre a desperate team right now," said Halak. "For them, every game is a playoff game. They need to get every point that they can." Notes: Olympians from both teams were honoured in a pre-game ceremony. Blues defencemen Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Pietrangelo drew loud cheers from the crowd when they were saluted, along with Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis and goaltender Roberto Luongo, for helping Canada win the 2014 Olympic gold medal. … Tortorella worked his first home game since receiving a six-game suspension for storming the Calgary Flames dressing room area Jan. 18. … Canucks captain Henrik Sedin returned to action after suffering an undisclosed injury before the Olympics. He missed the past two practices while tending to a personal matter in Sweden, but returned Wednesday in time for the game. Defenceman Kevin Bieksa returned after missing five games before the Olympic break with a foot injury. … Vancouver centre Ryan Kesler sat out with a hand injury suffered while playing for the U.S. in the Olympics. Canucks defencemen Chris Tanev (thumb) and Andrew Alberts (concussion) remained out. … Blues defenceman Jordan Leopold missed the game due to an ankle injury. Real Salt Lake will square off with the Los Angeles Galaxy for the second time in five days on Thursday at Rio Tinto Stadium in the second leg of their Western Conference semifinal series. Catch the game live on TSN2 at 9pm et/6pm pt. RSL enters Thursdays contest down 1-0 after losing in Los Angeles to a Sean Franklin goal. But Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis thinks the quick turnaround will benefit his team. The Claret and Cobalt had 11 days off between its final regular season match and the first leg against the Galaxy, and Kreis wasnt surprised that his side struggled a bit in the first leg. "This is the third or fourth time this season where weve had more than 10 days in between matches," Kreis said. "It causes some difficulties just with our rhythm and our flow. Especially in our possession." Those issues were evident in the first match on Sunday, and that result only continued a trend of trouble for RSL when having too much time off. Since the beginning of September, Salt Lake has had gaps of 14 days, eight days, 14 days and 11 days between games, with the club posting a mark of 0-3-1 in those matches. On the flip side, the team is 8-2-3 in games with four or fewer days of rest in all competitions. Kreis has said that being down 1-0 really wont change the mentality of his side going into the game, but he acknowledged that there is a little different feeling going into this match. "When youre in the middle of the season, you feel like even if things go really wrong, youve got some time to fix it," Kreis said. "You get to the end of the season and you know if things go really wrong, your seasons over. And I dont want it to be over. Ive had a really enjoyable time this year and Id like to press on for a few more weeks." The Galaxy would like to bring an end to that run for Salt Lake, and in the process, press on toward claiming a third successive MLS Cup. Los Angeles was clearly the better side in the first leg, but was only able to come away with a one-goal advantage. Having a lead is important, yet defender Omar Gonzalez knows that his side is in for a real battle on Thursday and that they must come prepared to put in a complete performance. "Were not going in there overconfident. Were going in there to put our heads down and put in some good, hard work, because thats what its going to take," Gonzalez said. The Galaxy has won three of the first four games between the teams this season - including Sundays first leg - and forward Landon Donovan feels like his team is in a great position to get the necessary result on Thursday and advance to the Western Conference final. "We went [to Salt Lake City] twice this year with less than our full team," Donovan said following LAs 1-0 victory on Sunday. "One game we won, 2-0, and one game was 1-1 until the 84th minute or so [as RSL scored two late goals for a 3-1 victory]. Were very confident. We go there with a full team, our teams very fit now, were well rested, were healthy, and we like our chances." Confident Timbers ready to take down Seattle The Portland Timbers made quite an impression in their first MLS playoff match on Saturday, going to Seattle and handing the Sounders a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their Western Conference semifinal. And that result gives the club plenty of confidence ahead of Thursdays return leg in Portland at JELD-WEN Field, which is a place that Timbers head coach Caleb Porter has labeled "a fortress". Catch the game live on TSN2 at 11pm et/8pm pt. "Were one step away," Porter said Saturday after the Timbers win. "We obviously have to have a good performance next game Thursday at home. But they have to come on our home field and get a piece of us in order to get through, and I like our chances. Obviously, we have to play as well as we did in this game. We have to be as hungry, we have to fight as hard, we have to be as organized." Portland knows that a draw on Thursday will be enough to reach the Western Conference final, while Seattle must do what only one team did this season, and that is win a match in Portland. The Timbers put together the top home record in MLS, going 11-1-5 at JELD-WEN Field this season, and that lone defeat came March 9 against Montreal in the second regular-season game of the campaign. Since Aug. 21, Portland has not allowed a goal at home, a streak that spans 450 minutes and includes five straight clean sheets. With that in mind it is no wonder the Timbers are in a confident mood ahead of Thursdays match. However, the Sounders find themselves in a familiar position after the first leg, and are not fazed by the deficit. In the past two seasons Seattle has lost the first leg of a playoff series by a 3-0 score, with the first coming to Real Salt Lake and last season against Los Angeles. The Sounders were unable to overturn either of those deficits, but the 2-1 score they face is certainly not as big a hurdle. "I know right now its not nice, but it doesnt change how we approach the game in Portland," Sounders goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann said. "We still go out trying to win. Thats all we have to do. We just need to win by one goal to get it to overtime." The reason for optimism in Seattle is the late goal scored by midfielder Osvaldo Alonso which reduced the deficit to 2-1. A first-half header from Ryan Johnson was followed by Darlington Nagbes goal in the second half, putting Portland in complete control. But Alonso scored in stoppage time to hand his team a lifeline, and head coach Sigi Schmid thinks his team is fully capable of going to Portland and getting the necessary result. "Its halftime of the game," Schmid said after Saturdays defeat. "We feel very confident we can go to Portland and win. Just as Portland came here and won, we feel very confident we can go there and win." Schmids team would also be boosted by the return of both Obafemi Martins and DeAndre Yedlin, who are to training this week after missing out on the first leg against Portland. With forward Lamar Neagle out through suspension because of an accumulation of yellow cards, Martins return to the lineup would be huge, while Yedlin is hoping to recover in time from an ankle injury to take his place in midfield. Cubs Alec Mills Jersey .C., won gold in the womens 200-metre backstroke, and Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont. MIAMI -- Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is going from the World Series champions to a team that lost 100 games. Saltalamacchia has agreed to a $21 million, three-year deal with the Miami Marlins, two people familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. The people confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been finalized. Saltalamacchia started the past three seasons for the Boston Red Sox, who were reluctant to offer him a multiyear deal. The switch-hitter batted a career-high .273 with 15 homers, 40 doubles and 65 RBIs last season. He hit .188 in the post-season and was benched during the World Series. The Marlins will count on Saltalamacchia to give their offence a much-needed boost. Miami ranked last in the majors in 2013 in runs and batting, and their catchers batted only .194 and totalled nine home runs, with Jeff Mathis, Rob Brantly and Migueel Olivo sharing the job.dddddddddddd Mathis is expected to return next season as a backup. "Welcome to Miami Jarrod!" Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton tweeted. "Marlins need water thats Salty." Under terms of the agreement with Saltalamacchia, hell make $6 million in 2014, $7 million in 2015 and $8 million in 2016. He becomes by far the highest-paid player for the Marlins, who had the lowest payroll in the NL last season at $45 million and are expected to be in that vicinity in 2014. The 28-year-old Saltalamacchia made $4.5 million last season. Hes the first catcher to agree to a multiyear deal with the Marlins since John Buck, who signed an $18 million, three-year deal in 2011 and was traded a year ago. NAPLES, Italy -- Andy Murray completed a straight sets victory over Andreas Seppi as Britain levelled the Davis Cup quarterfinal against Italy 1-1 on Saturday. Murray won 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in more than three hours for a sixth straight victory over Seppi as he kept alive Britains bid to reach the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 1981. The match had been suspended Friday night due to fading light, with the British No. 1 leading 6-4, 5-5. When play resumed, Murray immediately broke and then held his serve to take a commanding lead. Seppi appeared to be getting back into the game with an early break in the third set. But the Italian immediately relinquished his advantage with a double fault to allow Murray to break back. The two-time Grand Slam champion won five games in a row to seal the match. Seppi will rue his missed opportunities in the second set where, after wasting two chances to take a 5-2 lead, he also had four set points saved before a double fault handed Murray the decisive break. Murray will return to the court later Saturday for the doubles match with Colin Fleming against Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli. Italy has not lost at home to Britain since 1926 and will be hoping the vociferous home support can help it reach the final four for the first time in 16 years. Authentic Al MacInnis Jersey . Joakim Nordstrom and Garret Ross also scored for Chicago and Corey Crawford made 30 saves. So the Suns 100-94 victory over Boston Wednesday night was an uphill affair, with Phoenix relying on balance rather than its trademark high energy.SAN FRANCISCO -- Rene Rivera remembers his last home run, three years ago next month at Oakland for the Minnesota Twins. His latest will certainly be memorable, too, and did plenty to give San Diegos inconsistent offence a boost. Rivera hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth to follow his two-run double for a career-high five RBIs, single handedly backing Tyson Ross in the Padres 6-4 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. "Sooner or later our hittings going to come around," Rivera said. "We needed this one. Its a good feeling. Its good for the team." Ross (3-3) did just enough over 5 1-3 innings to beat the Giants for the second time in 11 days, allowing eight hits and four runs with four strikeouts and two walks. After Michael Morse put San Francisco ahead on two-run single in the fourth, Rivera answered with his first homer of the year. He hadnt driven in a run all season before Monday, and the five RBIs were most by a Padres player at 15-year-old AT&T Park. "We needed a game like that from one of our guys," manager Bud Black said. "Its been a long time coming. Weve had a hard time scoring runs in bunches." Brandon Hicks homered for the second straight day, following his walkoff a day earlier against Cleveland with a leadoff shot in the fifth. Hunter Pence hit an RBI triple in the fourth. First base umpire Angel Hernandez had two calls overturned by replay. Giants manager Bruce Bochy came out in the third to request a review after Hernandez called Xavier Nady safe on a close play at first. The umpiring crew overturned the call in 1 minute, 31 seconds. Hernandez was involved in another overturn in the fourth when Black requested a review. Ross was ruled thrown out by third baseman Pablo Sandoval. In 1:18, the call was overturned and Sandoval was charged with an error. Giants starter Madison Bumgarner (2-3) walked a season-high four, and his four earned runs matched his most of 2014. He didnt pitch into the sixth for the third time in his six starts and lost three straight outings for tthe first time since Aug.dddddddddddd 25-Sept. 5, 2012. The Giants had won seven straight home games against the Padres started by the lefty. "I think its fair to say hes made a few more mistakes than were accustomed to," Bochy said. "A strange night. We just couldnt get it done." Ross, born in Berkeley and raised in Oakland, faced the minimum through three -- helped by double plays in the first and second then two strikeouts in the third. The right-hander pitched eight scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in his April 18 win against San Francisco at Petco Park as San Diego took two of three from its division rival. "Its always nice to come back home and get a win," Ross said. "The defence was great tonight and got me out of a couple jams, and the offence came to play." Alexi Amarista drove in an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Huston Street, San Diegos fourth reliever, then finished for his 10th save in as many tries and 35 of 36 dating to last May. He lowered his ERA to 0.82. NOTES: A moment of silence and a video tribute were held before the game for Hall of Fame Padres broadcaster Jerry Coleman, who died in January at 89. Another moment of silence was held for victims of the ferry disaster in South Korea as the Giants celebrated Korean Heritage Night. ... Eller scored the midway through the third period after Dallas scored twice to tie it, leading Canadiens to a 6-4 win over the Stars on Thursday night.OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson asked his players a simple question during Fridays morning shootaround: How many of them had ever been on a team 14 games over .500? Only veterans Jermaine ONeal, Steve Blake and Andre Iguodala raised their hands. With so many home games remaining, the opportunity in front of the Warriors is rare. Golden State took another step forward Friday night by easing past the Atlanta Hawks 111-97 for its third straight win. "Were chasing greatness," Jackson said. "Were not going to be satisfied. Were going to continue to try to chalk up Ws, continue to battle and continue to celebrate where we are as a basketball team. Its a great time. And if nobody else knows it, we know it." David Lee had 18 points and six rebounds, and ONeal came off the bench to add 17 points and eight rebounds to lift the Warriors (39-24) a season-high 15 games over .500 with a relatively smooth win. Iguodala and Stephen Curry each scored 13 points to help Golden State build a 66-52 halftime lead and go ahead by 20 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors, fresh off a 4-2 road trip, are 8-2 since the All-Star break and beginning to look like the team that roared to the second-round of the playoffs last year. "Ive been 15 under in New York a bunch of times and when I first got here," Lee said. "It says a lot about the direction this organizations headed that were breaking through and reaching goals like that." Paul Millsap had 16 points and seven rebounds after missing the last five games because of a bruised right knee for the Hawks, who have lost five straight. Mike Scott added 14 points and DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Teague scored nine points apiece as Atlanta continued its late-season slide. The teams traded baskets for most of the first half until the Warriors put together a 12-1 spurt in the closing minutes that the Hawks (26-34) never recovered from. "We lost our focus," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. "WWe lost our mental toughness at the end of the second quarter and they were able to get out on us to like a 14-point lead going into halftime.dddddddddddd That stretch really hurt us." Golden State began a stretch of nine of 11 and 13 of its final 20 games at Oracle Arena. The Warriors want to use the finishing stretch to re-establish their home-court advantage and make a run at the Los Angeles Clippers, who are four games ahead in the Pacific Division. The Warriors, who needed Iguodalas 3-pointer as time expired to beat the Hawks 101-100 in Atlanta on Jan. 3, allowed little drama in the rematch. Draymond Greens 3-pointer capped a run that put the Warriors ahead 97-77 with 6:09 remaining in the fourth quarter. The depleted Hawks, with big men Al Horford and Gustavo Ayon out for the season, never seriously challenged. The only major setback for the Warriors came when shooting guard Klay Thompson limped to the locker room six minutes into the first quarter with a strained lower back. He did not return for precautionary reasons, the team said. Thompson has been Golden States most durable player the past three years. He has played in a franchise-record 211 straight regular-season games to start his career. Jackson said Thompson couldve started the second half, but there was no reason to with the Warriors in control. Millsap moved Atlanta within four early in the third quarter, but he had little help inside. Golden State led 85-77 entering the fourth quarter before pulling away. "We got away from what weve been doing," Millsap said. "Its kind of tough to lose that discipline, especially when youre on the road." NOTES: Curry has made at least one 3-pointer in 51 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NBA after Kyle Korvers league-record 127-game streak ended in Atlantas loss at Portland on Wednesday. Korver was 1-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc against the Warriors. ... The Hawks play at the Clippers on Saturday night. ... DETROIT -- James Ihedigbos hard work has paid off. The Detroit Lions signed Ihedigbo to a $3.1 million, two-year contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person, who said the deal included a $750,000 signing bonus, spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the terms had not been announced. Ihedigbo earned a spot in the NFL after being an undrafted free agent and a walk-on in college. The Lions plan to put him in the starting lineup next to safety Glover Quin to replace Louis Delmas, who they released last month. Ihedigbo ranked second in tackles for Baltimore Ravens last season and had three interceptions after having one in his previous five years in the league. He will be reunited with first-year coach Jim Caldwell and defensive co-ordinator Teryl Austin, both of whom were assistant coaches last year in Baltimore. He started 12 games in 2011 for the New England Patriots and had 67 tackles, ranking fifth on the team. Ihedigbo made his NFL debut with the New York Jets during the 2008 season. He was cut by the Jets the previous year as an undrafted rookie, who went from being a walk-on to a standout at Massachusetts. Detroit seems to have accomplished its major goals so far this off-season. The Lions signed former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate and ex-New Orleans Saints fullback Jed Collins as free agents. They also re-signed running back Joique Bell, tight end Brandon Pettigrew and centre Dominic Raiola. The franchise will likely shift its focus on contract talks with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who is scheduled to count more than $20 million against the salary cap in 2014. The 49ers announced Thursday that Manningham had signed a two-year deal to join the team he helped knock out in the NFC championship game two months ago in their latest offensive upgrade at wide receiver. Brewers Stephen Vogt Jersey . Head coach Randy Carlyle confirmed the news after the Leafs morning skate on Monday. Kozun was hurt during Friday nights home game against the Red Wings and did not make the return trip to Detroit for Saturdays game. The Colorado Avalanche saved some money in a forward swap, but took the worse player in the process. Numbers Game looks at the trade that sees Daniel Briere and PA Parenteau switching spots. The Canadiens Get: RW PA Parenteau and a fifth-round pick. Parenteau, 31, is a late bloomer who didnt reach the NHL for good until he was 27-years-old, but hes been a productive player, scoring 196 points in the past four seasons, which ranks 55th in the league. He fell out of favour in Colorado last season, missing 25 games with a couple of knee injuries and playing 16:57 per game, his lowest average time on ice of the past four seasons. On an Avalanche team that was among the leagues worst possession-wise, Parenteau was nearly break-even, so he wasnt particularly a problem in that respect. In Montreal, Parenteau should have a good opportunity to play in a top-six role, which is suitable for his price tag of $4.0-million over the next two seasons. A fifth-round pick brings with it a less than 15% chance of yielding an NHL player, but its a bit of a sweetener for the Habs taking on an extra year. Given that Montreal is getting the better player, that sweetener might not have been altogether necessary. The Avalanche Get: RW Daniel Briere. Briere is a 36-year-old who is well past his prime as a scoring forward, with a serious decline in productivity over the past couple seasons, managing 41 points in 103 games over the last two years.dddddddddddd Briere was dropped down the Canadiens depth chart last season, playing 12:46 per game, his lowest since 2000-2001. While Brieres game has declined -- hes not as quick as he once was -- he does come with a rep as a playoff performer, putting up 116 points in 124 postseason games over his career, which is tied for fourth among active players. Briere signed a two-year, $8-million deal as a free agent last summer, so his deal has one year remaining. He doesnt figure to play a prominent role in Colorado, but Briere should have a shot to play in Colorados top nine. If he does, theres a decent chance that, even if he scores a little bit more with more ice time, Brieres sinking possession stats will only be exacerbated by the Avalanches puck possession troubles. In the grand scheme of things, the Avalanche got away from two years of paying Parenteau, which was their motivation, but the price to pay means taking an inferior player for one year. Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter is unlikely to return to action against Manchester City this weekend. Hes opposed by 30-year-old Dominican Ervin Santana, whos winless in four starts since defeating the New York Mets on Aug. 4. CALGARY -- The misery continued for the goal-starved Calgary Flames on Thursday night. Jaroslav Halak made 33 saves and St. Louis got goals from five different players as the Blues ran their win streak to seven in a row with a 5-0 victory over the slumping Flames, who were shut out for the fifth time in the last seven games. The two teams last met on Dec. 23. In that game, also played at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames came from behind for a dramatic 4-3 victory. Calgarys offence has completely dried up since, scoring just five times in seven games -- four coming Monday in a 4-3 win in Colorado. In the Flames last five games at home theyve mustered only one goal, on Dec. 31 by rookie Sean Monahan. "We got outplayed in pretty much every facet of the game tonight," said Flames winger Lee Stempniak, who has no goals in his last 15 games. "Im a big believer in earning your breaks and earning your luck out there. We havent been playing well enough to get those chances." Flames coach Bob Hartley said the slump is taking its toll. "To score goals, thats the toughest thing to do in the NHL," Hartley said. "I feel for my players because I see them work every day. For many players, its pretty tough to ask more than what theyre giving us right now. They care, I see them basically mentally destroyed after some games but were proud and were going to keep fighting." Stempniak said hes never been a part of a scoring drought like this. "Individually, guys go through some tough times but never something that affected the whole team," Stempniak said. "You just have to think youre going to get out of it and believe youre going to get out of it." Coming off a 6-0 road loss Tuesday in Phoenix, Calgary got off to a quick start with a 4-1 edge in shots three minutes into the game. However, Stempniak and Dennis Wideman then took consecutive minor penalties and although the Blues failed to score, they began to apply pressure. With the games momentum having turned back in their favour, St. Louis took a 1-0 lead when Chris Stewart scored 18 seconds after Widemans penalty expired. Vladimir Sobotka scored just over two minutes later and that would turn out to be more than enough offence for Halak, who improved to 18-6-3. "Especially in the first period, they had a few chances that got me into the game," said Halak, who has three shutouts this season and 28 in his career. "Then we started playing better and we didnt give them pretty much any chances the rest of the first." Halak was at his best in the second period when the Blues were outshot 15-10 but scored the only goal. Recently named to the Slovakian Olympic team, Halak hadnt played since getting pulled after the first period on Dec. 28 after getting beaten three times on 13 shots against Chicago. Recently, Halak has been battling illness. "When you go through the sickness, youre low on energy and you get tired all the time but now, Im trying to work my way back. Im not 100 per cent back with my energy yet but I battled through it and it was a big win for us," said Halak. Ian Cole, Alex Pietrangelo and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for St. Louis (31-7-5). The Blues pull even in points with Chicago atop the Central Division. The Blues have three games in hand. "Jaro had to be there in the second period for us. They make it 3-1 or 3-2, shes a different game in the third. He shut the door and good on him," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock. Calgary (15-23-6) has lost five home games in a row in regulation for the first time since March 7-31, 2000. "We said right from the start that we were starting a rebuild," Hartley said. "Were hitting major speed bumps right now and overall if we look at the positive side, theyre tough lessons but thats going to make us better." The Flames are 28th in the NHL, three points up on Edmonton and seven ahead of Buffalo. "We have lots of young players that are in a major school right now. Theyre in the best hockey league in the world and sometimes, things dont go their way but we keep putting them out there and they battle hard," Hartley said. "Thats the No. 1 criteria. I want to see the compete level of the 20 guys in the lineup in every game. We will not accept mediocre commitment. Obviously, the results arent what we want to be but at the same time, we will not lower the expectations of this organization at any point." Karri Ramo finished with 24 stops to fall to 7-8-3. Perhaps surprisingly, as the game ended, there was minimal booing from the Saddledome crowd, who seemed to show indifference instead. Despite many rows of empty seats in the upper levels, the crowd was announced as a sellout of 19,289. Notes: With points in their last 10 (9-0-1), the Blues are one back of their team record of 11 (10-0-1), which was set Jan. 21, 1999 to March 4, 2000 ... David Jones (eye) did not play for the Flames. Hes missed three games. Calgarys only healthy scratch was D Derek Smith ... In the last 11 games, the Flames have only led for 15 minutes 25 seconds -- all of that coming in its only regulation win ... Calgarys power play is 1 for 20 in the last seven games. That stretch has come without Kris Russell (knee), who missed his eighth game. Marlins Derek Dietrich Jersey . Five years ago, Nestor and Zimonjic beat the American twins to win the title. But the Bryans, the worlds top-ranked team, needed 74 minutes to earn the victory Saturday as both Nestor and Zimonjic lost serve in the second set. CHICAGO -- As soon as he stepped on the mound, Jake Odorizzi went on the attack. And nobody could stop him. Odorizzi struck out nine in six scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. "The first at-bat itself I felt like I was throwing it where I wanted to, and once it carries over to the next batter you kind of know you have that going today," he said. Evan Longoria drove in a run and scored two. Yunel Escobar added two hits and three RBIs. Ben Zobrist had two hits and scored twice for the Rays, who improved to a major league-best 15-6 since July 12. They will try to complete the three-game sweep on Sunday. "If we keep the nose down and keep playing well, youre going to look up at some point and all of a sudden people are going to say, Hey, youre getting pretty close," manager Joe Maddon said. Odorizzi (8-9) gave up three hits and didnt walk anyone. The right-hander came within two strikeouts of his career high after getting hit hard in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (6-12) allowed four runs -- three earned -- and five hits in six innings. He is 1-5 in his past nine starts. Cubs prized prospect Javier Baez doubled but had a tough day overall, going 1 for 4 and committing his first error. He had three strikeouts after whiffing four times Friday in his Wrigley Field debut. The second basemans error came when he dropped a throw from Luis Valbuena after the third baseman made a diving stop on a ball hit by Longoria with a runner on first in the sixth inning. Jackson then walked Matt Joyce to load the bases, and Escobar made it 4-0 with a two-run single. The Rays also scored two in the fourth when Longoria doubled in a run and came around on Escobars base hit. Kirby Yates pitched two perfect innings, striking out three. Jake McGee then gave up two hits but struck out threee in a scoreless ninth.dddddddddddd. The Rays took a 2-0 lead in a fourth inning that featured some unusual plays. Zobrist led off with a ground-rule double to the right-field corner off Justin Ruggianos glove that stuck in the ivy. He moved up when centre fielder Arismendy Alcantara dove to his left to snag James Loneys liner and came around on Longorias double. Escobar added a two-out RBI single that Ruggiano pulled up on before making a flat-footed throw to the infield with the runner headed home. "It was just a mental mistake by me," he said. TRAINERS ROOM Rays: Outfielder Wil Myers (broken right wrist) was scheduled to start a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Durham and serve as the designated hitter. Cubs: Manager Rick Renteria said newcomer Felix Doubront (strained left calf) "looked good" during a bullpen session but had no word on a possible rehab assignment. The left-hander was acquired from Boston on July 30. ON DECK Rays: Right-hander Alex Cobb (7-6, 3.52 ERA) looks to continue his strong stretch as the Rays wrap up their three-game series against the Cubs. He has allowed two runs or fewer in five straight starts. Cubs: Left-hander Travis Wood (7-9, 5.08) looks for his first victory in nearly two months. An All-Star last season, Wood is 0-4 with a 6.10 ERA in nine starts since a win at Philadelphia on June 15. A LITTLE EARLY MLB Advanced Media, using the Cubs Twitter account, jumped the gun a little bit when it posted the Rays beat Chicago 4-0. That turned out to be accurate, but the problem was the game was still in the ninth inning. They later Tweeted an apology. DESIGNS ON SUCCESS With the Cubs wearing throwback uniforms from 1988 on Sunday, the Rays will also go retro -- sort of. Tampa Bay will wear uniforms with light blue shirts and pants, yellow sleeves and dark blue accents suggesting what the team would have worn had it existed in the 1980s. The designer? Liverpool profited from an own goal in the fifth minute of injury time to escape with a 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday after one of the most chaotic finishes to a Premier League game. Four goals were scored in a pulsating final eight minutes at Loftus Road - the last unwitting netted by Steven Caulker, who turned the ball into his own goal to gift Liverpool a fortunate victory. A madcap finale began in the 67th minute when QPR defender Richard Dunne put Liverpool 1-0 ahead with his record-extending 10th own goal in the Premier League. Liverpools second straight win left QPR in last place and increased the pressure on its manager Harry Redknapp. Stoke came from behind to beat Swansea 2-1 in the other game, with Jonathan Walters heading in a 76th-minute winner. Liverpool climbed to fifth in the standings after an error-strewn display that heightened the concerns about its brittle defence, particularly with back-to-back games against Real Madrid coming up in the Champions League. Were coming up over the next fortnight against the best team in Europe and we have to defend better than that, said Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who said he was in a state of shock after the crazy finish to the match. After 28 goals in seven games on Saturday, including an 8-0 win for Southampton and a four-goal haul for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, theres still time for more drama in an incident-packed eighth round of the Premier League when Manchester United visits West Bromwich Albion on Monday. The frantic nature of the closing stages may spare Mario Balotelli from criticism after another below-par display from the Italy striker, capped by a dreadful miss from about seven meters out in front of an empty goal in the 61st. Balotellis performance contrasted with that of Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling, who has been the subject of headlines in the British media this week for telling England manager Roy Hodgson that he was too tired to play an international game last weekend. Sterling was ubiquitous against QPR, with his foraging runs upfield in injury time helping set up Philippe Coutinhos goal that made it 2-1 and then Caulkers match-clinching intervention. Sterling was also instrumental in the opening goal by playing a quick free kick to Johnson, whose cross was deflected in by Dunne. It was great courage and cleverness from him today, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said of Sterling. Chile forward Eduardo Vargas equalized twice for QPR, first in the 87th minute with his first Premier League goal and again in the second minute of stoppage time with a header from a corner. QPR is bottom on goal difference but Redknapp is defiant about his future at the club. I cant do any more and there isnt anyone (who) could do any better here at the moment than me, I dont think, Redknapp said. At Britannia Stadium, Swansea striker Wilfried Bony and Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam scored first-half penalties before Walters earned the hosts back-to-back wins with a powerful header from Oussama Assaidis cross. According to the Globe and Mail, a decision between the NHL and the Players Association should come within the six months. "I can tell you, (a decision) shouldnt take all that long," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Globe and Mail. Ben Simmons Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. Dana Barros Jersey . Off-Season Game Plan looks at a Wild team that has a nice mix of proven veterans along with young, inexpensive talent on the rise. When the Wild signed Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, making a big splash in the summer of 2012, it set the franchise on a path to being more competitive, but a big reason that they have been so competitive is the contributions of young players who still have more to give.San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Pavelski scored the game-winning goal early in the third period to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. Brent Burns also scored and Joe Thornton assisted on both markers for the Sharks, who have won six of their last seven games. Alex Stalock stopped 18-of-19 shots fired his way in the win. Christian Folins first NHL goal accounted for Minnesotas lone goal and Darcy Kuemper made 28 saves in defeat. We put ourselves in a winnable hockey game, Wild head coach Mike Yeo said. In the end, we just didnt do quite enough. After a scoreless first, Burns took a cross-ice feed from Justin Braun and blasted a shot past Kuemper from just above the left circle for a power-play goal with 5:09 to play in the middle stanza. Sean Monahan continued his impressive rookie season, scoring his team-leading 14th goal as Calgary snapped its record seven-game losing streak at the Scotiabank Saddledome with a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. "We have great fans so we want to play hard for them and win games for them," said Monahan. "Together as a group, we know we can be better than we were and thats what were working towards." Monahan opened the scoring at 11:44 of the first period. It was the first time in nine home games Calgary had struck first. In fact, the Flames hadnt held the lead in a home game since Dec. 12, the day general manager Jay Feaster was fired. "It was nice to get one early and we started to build off that," said Monahan, 19, who moved ahead of Mike Cammalleri and Jiri Hudler for the team lead in goals. "It was a big moment in the game for us and that helped us carry momentum throughout the game." The goal was set up by TJ Galiardis hustle. After winning a race to the puck deep in the Coyotes zone, Galiardi promptly zipped the puck in front where Monahan tapped it in behind goaltender Mike Smith, firing up the sell-out crowd of 19,289. "A pretty incredible play. He showed his speed to get to the puck and win that race. It was an unbelievable pass to get it over and lucky enough, I finished it," said Monahan, who is third in rookie goals behind Colorados Nathan MacKinnon (17) and San Joses Tomas Hertl (15). Calgary never relinquished that lead thanks partly to Karri Ramo, who finished the night with 30 saves to improve to 9-10-4. The 27-year-old Finn was especially sharp in the opening 20 minutes when Phoenix outshot the Flames 11-6 but trailed 1-0. He was counted on again in the third and in the final minute in particular when the Coyotes pulled Smith for an extra attacker and poured on the pressure. "Weve faced some tough times. But the last few home games, weve been playing really good too, especially against Pittsburgh we played really good and we havent got the reward," Ramo said. "We deserved to win today." Lance Bouma and Matt Stajan also scored for Calgary (17-27-7), which scored more than two goals for just the second time since Christmas. The Flames had been outscored 22-4 during its seven-game home losing streak. "Wee can take a lot defensively from this game, especially with their D that are so active," Stajan said.dddddddddddd"We have four more games here at home and we want to make sure we keep at it." Kicking off a five-game homestand, Calgary will try to make it two wins in a row Friday night against Nashville. Antoine Vermette and Shane Doan scored for Phoenix (23-18-9), which has dropped eight of its last 11. The Coyotes remain four points behind the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. "Its challenging but the guys that have been around long enough in this league know that youre gong to hit those stretches in a season. Its how you manage to get out of it," says Vermette. Winless in its last five games away from home, Phoenixs three-game road trip to Western Canada continues Friday night in Edmonton. "Sometimes its tempting to get frustrated and fall into that trap. But if you do the right thing over a long period of time, eventually its going to turn your way," Vermette said. The Flames surged in front 2-0 at 8:48 of the second period on a perfectly executed fast break. Curling out from behind his own net, TJ Brodie threaded a long pass to Bouma at the Phoenix blue-line. In behind the Coyotes defence, Bouma darted in and snapped a perfect shot into the top corner. Vermette cut the lead to 2-1 on a short-handed goal less than five minutes later but Stajan restored the two-goal cushion before the period ended . "Weve been down lately in a lot of games and weve got to be better," said Doan, who got Phoenix back within one at 6:50 of the third. "If you look at our record, weve been average if that and weve got a lot better team than an average team." Smith, who had 23 saves, falls to 17-15-8. Notes: Flames LW Mike Cammalleri (concussion) missed his sixth game. Also not dressed for Calgary was LW Paul Byron (foot)... Missing for Phoenix was C Martin Hanzal (lower body), who missed his second game and D David Schlemko (upper body). Both are day-to-day... Calgarys only two regulation wins in the last 21 home games have come against the Coyotes. They also beat Phoenix 4-1 on Dec. 4... After 48 games without one, the Coyotes have short-handed goals in two consecutive games... With Henrik Sedins streak ending, Vermette (361) and D Keith Yandle (353) now have the third and fourth longest active iron-man streaks in the NHL. cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
